Staying at this site was one of the most therapeutic outdoor experiences we’ve ever had. From the amazing hospitality from our host Brenda to the beautiful sceneries and friendly animals, the entire experience was golden! We truly enjoyed ourselves in this weekend getaway and couldn’t have asked for a better hipcamp experience.
Located less than two hours away from Los Angeles, we were amazed by the pastoral landscapes in Oak Glen. Who would’ve known such a lovely small town was tucked in so close to an urban setting. As our car approached the property, we were greeted by an extensive dog brigade running down the dirt road to meet us. Brenda welcomed us with warm hospitality and gave us a tour of the property as well as introduced us to all the different animals. Brenda’s knowledge of her animals are extensive and she was so patient with our numerous questions.
Along with the dogs and cats, we were excited to see so many types of animals--llamas, alpacas, sheeps, goats, pigeons, chickens, geese, horses, donkey, and even peacocks! As animal lovers, we immediately knew this weekend was going to be a blast and were delighted to find her cats, dogs, and peacocks keeping us company throughout the night. If you’re lucky like we were, you’ll be invited to take a hike with the llamas either on their extensive 5 acre property or in the nature preserve nearby. There seems to be a never-ending amount of activities to do on her property, from collecting some of the chicken’s “freshly-squeezed eggs” to feeding her livestock, we always had something to look forward to!
We had the option of setting up our tent in multiple areas: the grassy area up front (which had a big table, a firepit and chairs), another grassy plot further inside which was next to a treehouse, or in the treehouse which houses two cots. The site features utilities such as running water and a portapotty (a luxury compared to my backpacking days) as well as sweeter “moments” of outdoor chairs and decorative lighting to illuminate the dark nights. We had a blast chatting and laughing the night away as we made our banana boats and roasted marshmallows.
The site is supposedly at its peak beauty during spring, summer, and fall. Especially when it’s apple-picking season. We’ll be sure to come back :)
